Religion and ethics

The Education Act 1990 states 'in every government school, time is to be allowed for the religious education of children of any religious persuasion'. Special education in ethics (SEE) is offered as a secular alternative to special religious education (SRE).

Special religious education (SRE) is education in the beliefs and practices of an approved religious persuasion. Special education in ethics (SEE) is a program in ethical decision making, action and reflection within a secular framework.  'Alternative Meaningful Activities' may also be known as 'non-SRE'.

Students not attending SRE or SEE are to be provided with supervised 'Alternative Meaningful Activities'. These activities do not compete with SRE/SEE and are not  lessons in the curriculum. Suitable activities may include reading, private study, completing homework or other activities as considered to be appropriate by the school community.

Our school currently offers:

During enrolment, you can choose a special religious education option for your child from the school’s available approved providers. You can withdraw your child from special religious education by selecting alternative meaningful activities, or special education in ethics if it’s available.

You can update your preference by writing to the school or through the  online form  available at participating schools.

Visit the  department’s website  for more information about religion and ethics.

High potential and gifted education

At our school, we give the right support to help gifted learners to grow and do their best.

We notice these students early. They may learn quickly or show strong skills in creativity, leadership, problem solving or sport. We help them stay challenged with lessons and activities that match their strengths.

Library

At Cambewarra Public School we envision that our school library is where students and staff have the opportunity to develop the necessary skills in information and digital literacy to help them navigate the modern and every changing future information landscape.

This occurs through collaboration and consultation about the individual needs of all students and staff. The teacher librarian provides positive learning experiences to enable students to reach their full potential to become engaged readers who have a lifelong appreciation of reading and learning.

Students participate in lessons to develop skills that enable them to analyse and access information efficiently whilst developing the skills for critical and efficient analysis as users of information. Our library collection can be defined as, a place where relevant resources are curated, both print and digital, that meet the needs of all members of our school community.

Our library is flexible, modern and has a technologically current learning environment, which is adaptable to the ever- changing educational paradigms that exist in today’s world.

Our Library is open 3 days a week, Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday. Students can borrow books and participate weekly in lessons with our teacher librarian, Mrs Bennett, and their class teacher.

Students also have access to a wide collection of books, STEAM lessons as well as the development of information literacy and digital literacy skills. Students can suggest books they would like added to our collection, to ensure they have access to books they enjoy.

Our school has regular events such as author visits, Premiers Reading Challenge, National Simultaneous Storytime, Scholastic Book Club, celebration of CBCA Book Week including a book character parade and a book fair using our local Dymocks store. We participate in CBCA Shadow Judging and the Collide Book Trailer competition. When possible, our students participate in excursions to our local library.

Our learning approach

Our school uses explicit teaching. This means we clearly tell students what they are learning, why it is important and how to do it step by step. Explicit teaching helps students understand new ideas by breaking them into smaller parts.
